Have you always wanted to use the computer to collaborate with others on work and passion projects but experience ‘brain freeze’ and do not know how to proceed when confronted with the assortment of navigation buttons and icons on your desktop? You are not alone. It is normal for baby boomers or Gen Xers among us, who are not digital natives and have not attended formal computer training, such as our 16hrs – ICDL Computer Essential (Windows) course, to experience anxiety when required to operate a computer.

With the recent social distancing guidelines brought about by the pandemic leading to businesses moving online and the public replacing social gatherings with virtual hangouts, it is time to put a stop to this anxiety to get confident with using the computer. Having the confidence to work with computers will allow you to unlock a whole new world of possibilities.

In this 16-hrs ICDL Computer Essential (Windows) course, you will be given step-by-step guidance to execute the above mentioned tasks so that you can use your computer with confidence. The possibilities are endless when you can cast aside your doubts and fears to embrace the digital age.

At the end of this 2-days course, you will be able to:

  • Work effectively on the computer desktop using icons, windows
  • Create simple documents and print them
  • Know about the main concepts of file management and be able to efficiently organize files and folders
  • Appreciate key storage concepts and use utility software to compress and extract large files
  • Appreciate network concepts and connection options to be able to connect to a network
  • Recognize the importance of protecting data and devices from malware, and the importance of backing up data

What you will learn?

Computers and Devices

  • Identify different types of ICT services/uses like: Internet services, mobile technology, office productivity applications
  • Define the term hardware
  • Define the term End-User License Agreement (EULA). Understand importance of software licensing
  • Start Up, Shut Down

Desktop, Icons, and Settings

  • Identify common icons like those representing: files, folders, applications, printers, drives
  • Identify the different parts of a window: title bar, menu bar, toolbar, ribbon, status bar, scroll bar
  • View the computer’s basic system information: operating system name and version number, installed RAM

Outputs

  • Install and uninstall a Printer. Perform print test page
  • View, pause, restart, cancel a print job
  • Copy, move text within a document, between open documents

File Management

  • Understand how an operating system organises drives, folders, files in a hierarchical structure
  • Navigate between drives, folders, sub-folders, files
  • Sort files in ascending, descending order by name, size, type, date modified
  • Identify the main types of storage media like: internal hard disk, external hard disk, network drive

Networks

  • Identify some of its main uses like: World Wide Web (WWW), VoIP, e-mail, IM
  • Outline the purpose of a network: to share, access data and devices securely
  • Define the term Internet Service Provider (ISP)

Security and Well-Being

  • Identify different types of malware like: virus, worm, Trojan, spyware
  • Recognise computer and device energy saving practices
  • Identify some options available for enhancing accessibility like: voice recognition software screen reader, screen magnifier, on-screen keyboard, high contrast
